Diagnostic Psychoeducational and Psychological Testing

Psychological evaluations are available at StrongMinds Psychology for children, adolescents and young adults. The psychological evaluation is a useful tool in determining why a student is experiencing difficulties in school, to answer complex questions about one’s functioning, to clarify diagnosis or to guide treatment planning. We provide a thorough, customized evaluation which identifies the individual’s strengths, weakness and unique needs. We provide specific and detailed recommendations for how to best help the child/adolescent young adult in consideration of the assessment results. We have received feedback from families, educational specialists (including school-based providers), and other health professionals that our reports are comprehensive, individualized, and invaluable to intervention planning. Our reports are used in intervention planning by public, parochial, and private schools.

Psychoeducational Evaluations are available for preschoolers, children, adolescents, and young adults. Based on information we gather through an initial interview, we will determine which of the following are most appropriate for you or your child:

  • IQ Testing/Academically Gifted Testing–identifies giftedness and cognitive delays/disabilities
  • Achievement Testing– determines academic strengths and weaknesses; determines mastery of specific academic subjects (reading, writing & math)
  • ADHD Testing– determines the presence of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and executive functioning weaknesses
  • Learning Disability Testing– determines the presence of a Learning Disorder such as reading disorders, dyslexia, math disorders, writing disorders, and processing deficits.
  • School Observations– informs the evaluation through direct observation of the child in the classroom which will assist in the understanding of specific learning and behavioral disorders.

Psychological Evaluations assess emotional, behavioral and personality functioning to answer complex questions or identify diagnoses that may underlie areas of difficulty. These assessments often include components of the psychoeducational evaluation to obtain a comprehensive picture across multiple areas of functioning. Psychological evaluations are useful in clarifying symptoms and underlying explanations of:

  • Mood or Anxiety Disorders
  • Health Psychology Conditions
  • Developmental Delays and Disabilities
  • Interpersonal Difficulties

Executive Skills and ADHD Coaching

StrongMinds provides Coaching intervention. Much like an athletic or academic coach, the ADHD/Executive skills coach provides a structured and supportive framework in which the teen or young adult improves existing and learns new life management skills. The process is collaborative with the student and utilizes a “learning by doing” model. Skills are learned through a system of goal setting, practice, ongoing accountability and review. Students receive feedback on all coaching activities and parents are kept “in the loop.” Unlike therapy, which occurs face-to-face in the office, coaching utilizes phone calls, face-time, texting and email to facilitate frequent contact and “check-ins” to monitor progress towards short and long-term goals.

Coaching serves to:

  • Identify how unique strengths and weaknesses affect academic performance
  • Capitalize on strengths
  • Enhance school performance
  • Improve time management and planning abilities
  • Develop homework and school-based organizational strategies that work
  • Increase self awareness and personal empowerment
  • Reduce parent-child conflict over organizational and task completion issues
  • Improve performance and support growth and change

CalmMinds: Mindfulness Training Program (Individual and Groups)

The CalmMinds program, taught by a highly trained provider, teaches children and teens core mindfulness skills including “paying attention on purpose,” self-awareness, self-control, acceptance, flexible thinking and acceptance. Mindfulness is a mind-body therapeutic intervention that has been demonstrated to:

  • improve attention and focus
  • reduce anxiety and stress
  • increase frustration management
  • strengthen compassion and gratitude
  • enhance problem solving skills

Participation in this didactic, skills-based program may be individual or in group format and may occur at the same time as other services or separately. In addition, StrongMinds offers introduction to mindfulness training for parent, educators and students, at our facilities or yours.

Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET)

Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) is an innovative and research-supported technology for treating phobias (extreme fears of specific objects or situations  such as thunderstorms, flying or spiders). This approach allows a young person to gradually confront their fear in a virtual environment which simulates the feared situation.  Wearing a headset and earphones and using a navigation controller, the young person is immersed in the virtual environment and experiences the sights, sounds and feelings as if they were really there. The clinician controls the experience from a laptop and is able to customize the experience. Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy is especially useful for fears that are difficult to confront in the natural environment (e.g. thunderstorms). Currently, StrongMinds is able to treat Fear of Storms, Fear of Flying, Fear of Heights, Fear of Spiders, and Fear of Public Speaking. Sport and Performance Enhancement

StrongMinds specializes in teaching youth mental skills that boost confidence and enhance performance in sports and other areas of life. We believe that teaching young people how to be mentally tough will not only improve performance but enhance their personal development and promote well-being over a lifetime. We get excited about helping young people strive for greatness in sports and life by developing confidence and discipline, increasing enjoyment, and reaching their potential. Mental skills training has many positive effects for young athletes, just as it does for adults. Research has shown that youth can learn goal-setting, emotional control strategies, ways of managing stress, positive thinking, and imagery to enhance their performance. Current service offerings include:

  • Individual Performance Enhancement (Athletes and Performers) – Development and implementation of a customized plan and training program to enhance mental skills based on our thorough assessment.
  • Parent Consultation  – Develop a balanced approach to successfully parenting an athlete or performer.
